Ohkay Owingeh Head Start has 5 classrooms. All classrooms serve children 3 – 5 years of age and in their own unique aptitude. Being that Ohkay Owingeh is a Tribal based program we stay true to the culture of our people. Our children learn their Native language as well as their Native dances and for our non-native children we incorporate the Spanish traditions and language as well. The instruction that children receive is rich in every domain, some that children will continue to learn throughout their educational years. In the Social-Emotional Domain, children are taught how to recognize feelings, how to self-regulate, to interact with their peers, to be attentive to what is being taught. The Literacy Domain consists of recognizing written language, early writing skills, book appreciation, phonological awareness, learning the alphabet. They also learn Science and Social Studies, Creative Arts and Logic and Reasoning. As you can see Head Start is very attentive to all needs of children and families. Our goal is to instill as much as we can in every child who attends Head Start, to see that they are successful beyond their years of education.
